Field’s Edge comes from gleaning: leaving the edges of the field for others.
In Leviticus 19:9–10, God tells farmers not to harvest all the way to the edges of their fields. What they left behind was for the poor and the foreigner to gather.
Ruth 2 shows what that looked like. Ruth, a widow from Moab, gathers grain behind the harvesters in Boaz’s field to feed herself and her mother-in-law, Naomi. Boaz sees her and tells his workers to leave extra for her to find. It was food with dignity, gathered through her own work, because someone had left room on purpose.
A church website is the edge of the field. It’s where people who aren’t part of the church yet can find what they need: someone new in town, someone who hasn’t been to church in years, someone looking quietly before they ever walk through the door.
I’m Holden Gray. I’ve worked with church plants, and I played drums at church most of my life. Today I work with a lot of churches and church plants at MyGoodBooks, a bookkeeping firm for churches and nonprofits.
Every one of them needs a website. It’s essential, and it can be very expensive. Church plants start with little or no money, and the affordable options tend to turn out generic. That’s why I started Field’s Edge Studio.
The name is also how I try to run it. Those farmers could have kept the whole harvest, and they left the edges on purpose. So I leave room in my own field: church plants get a lower price here, because the churches with the least to spend shouldn’t have to settle for the least.
Built for the harvest, and for those at the edge.
